I am a self taught artist inspired to by the beauty and intricacy of the natural world. Inspiration can come from anywhere; a quality of light, the cast of a shadow, a rippling reflection, or a simple colour combination. My formal education is in Geography and while I no longer work in that field I enjoy incorporating that knowledge of the natural world into my work. My greates inspiration comes from time spent at family cottages on the St. Lawrence River or Lake Huron, where the natural world is at one’s fingertips. My greatest delight is when a viewer connects with my work, whether it catches a memory, feeling or simply interest.
My artistic style was once described as “sort of realism, but also not”. I quite like that description and have stuck with it as I feel it aptly describes my work. While I do work from photographic references I am always trying to be more free with how I represent the photo on the canvas, choosing which elements to keep, discard, or alter to best depict the scene. What I enjoy most is adding the tiny details to a piece that really bring it to life. I work in a variety of mediums including acrylic paint, water soluble oil paint, ink and pencil crayon. For each work I create I choose which medium I think best suited to the specific needs and challenges of that piece.
